British and North West Championships. He won the Formula
Honda title in 1997 and successfully defended it in 1998
by winning all 13 races he entered. He was offered a one-off
Formula Ford drive with the title-winning Haywood Racing
team and, as team-mate to Jensen Button, finished 6th at
Oulton Park. A stunning 1998 season was concluded in style,
when James was nominated for the BRDC McLaren Autosport
Young Driver of the Year Award. In 1999, James moved up
to the all new Formula Palmer Audi series, and then the
Formula Renault Sport Championship in 2000, finishing 11th
out of 30.
He moved to Sportscars in 2001, contesting selected rounds
of the Radical Enduro Championship both in the UK and in
Europe. Driving a works Lister Storm GT sportscar in the
inaugural ISC series, James become one of the youngest drivers
to take part in a sportscar race, qualifying on pole and
winning on his debut at Donington. After two years away
from the sport, James made a superb return in 2003 by recording
3 podium results to finish 5th in the SEAT Cupra Championship.
