Round 6: Brands Hatch

There was nothing to separate Tom Boardman, Tom Ferrier and Carl Breeze has they raced nose-to-tail throughout a nail-biting Round 6 of the Smartnav SEAT Cupra Championship at Brands Hatch.

Ferrier led for much of the race in his Darwin/Team Parker Racing Leon Cupra R, with Breeze and Boardman battling hard behind. The Safety Car came out when Alan Blencowe parked his Blue Diamond/Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra R in the gravel trap at Druids on lap 9 and Tom sneaked passed Breeze just before crossing the start/finish line and having to slow behind the Safety Car.

With three laps to go, Tom overtook Ferrier on the inside of Clearways and pulled out a 0.949 winning margin, with Breeze coming home in 3rd.

If the three-car battle for 1st wasn’t exciting enough, the four car battle for 4th place was even more thrilling. With nothing between them, even the most minor mistake would prove costly and when Mat Jackson (Whale Tankers/Jackson Motorsport Leon Cupra R) overtook Mark Cole (Bovis Lend Lease/Team Parker Racing Leon Cupra R) on the inside of Paddock Hill Bend at the start of lap 13, Mark lost only a tiny bit of momentum – but it was enough for Henry Taylor (Mortgage Strategy magazine/Total Control Racing Leon Cupra R) to overtake him as they entered Druids hairpin.

That fine move saw Mat finish 4th and score a bonus point for the best improvement on grid position, while Taylor, Cole and Ian Churchill (Bedford Battery Co/Churchill Motorsport) followed across the line in hot pursuit.

Jonathan Young failed to finish again after a minor collision with Dave Pinkney’s Motorbase Performance-run Leon Cupra R at Surtees saw his Commercial Vehicle Direct/SRE Motorsport Leon Cupra R spin backwards into the crash barriers.
