Round 15: Silverstone
Mat Jackson (Whale Tankers/Jackson Motorsport Leon Cupra R) did exactly what he said he was going to do by qualifying on pole, setting the fastest lap and winning Round 15 of the Smartnav SEAT Cupra Championship.
Tom Ferrier (Darwin/Team Parker Racing Leon Cupra R) shadowed Mat very closely and was in a challenging position when Mat ran wind twice on lap 11. But Mat kept his cool to win by 0.412 seconds.
Mat said: “The race pace was incredible. Tom Ferrier was sitting on my bumper from start to finish and I had no time to easy off at all. I made a few little mistakes on lap eleven, but they were not big enough to give Tom a run on me. If he was going to try and overtake it would have taken a mega move to get passed me, and I wasn’t going to let him do that.”
Ferrier said: “I knew it would be a close race because there was only a few hundredths of a second between Mat and I in qualifying. I really needed Mat to make a mistake and he just didn’t do one big enough to let me though. It was a great clean race.”
Tom Boardman (Special Tuning UK/Triple R Leon Cupra R) finished 3rd after a close race with Carl Breeze (Blue Chip Group/Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra R), while Henry Taylor (Mortgage Strategy magazine/Total Control Racing Leon Cupra R) was a very strong 5th.
Harry Vaulkhard (Fluid Design Solutions/JS Motorsport Leon Cupra R) started from the back of the grid after a technical infringement in qualifying and raced well to finish 8th.
Jonathan Young (Commercial Vehicle Direct/Triple R Leon Cupra R) spun in the Complex on lap two to avoid hitting a spinning Ian Churchill (Bedford Battery Co/Churchill Motorsport Leon Cupra R). While Ian’s race ended in the gravel trap, Young raced brilliantly to finish 9th ahead of Nick Leason (Cube Design/CMS Motorsport Leon Cupra R).
Chris Egginton (Harben Barker/Team GVR Leon Cupra R) was the only other driver to fail to finish, having out-braked himself and running into the gravel trap.
