Round 16: Silverstone

Tom Boardman thanked his Triple R team for transforming the set-up of his Special Tuning UK Leon Cupra R and giving him a car to win Round 16 of the Smartnav SEAT Cupra Championship in. It was Tom’s seventh win of the season and his first since Round 11 at Snetterton, which also denied Mat Jackson (Whale Tankers/Jackson Motorsport Leon Cupra R) five consecutive races wins. Tom also set the fastest lap of the race to score an extra point.
Mat led into the opening corner, followed by Tom Ferrier (Darwin/Team Parker Racing Leon Cupra R), Boardman and Henry Taylor (Mortgage Strategy magazine/Total Control Racing Leon Cupra R). As the top four pulled a way, they enjoyed a close battle which lasted all 18 laps.
Boardman overtook Ferrier on lap four and began to close in on the leader. With Jenson Button watching from the BRDC box, Tom and Mat were side-by-side going down the start/finish straight with the lead changing with a slick more down the inside of Copse Corner on lap eight. Mat was able to keep close behind Tom and the only difference between the two appeared to be Tom’s faster line around Luffield Corner, which gave him the advantage down on star/finish straight on each lap. Tom finally finished 1.102 seconds ahead of Mat.
By the end of the race there was a lot of clear air between the top two and the battle for 3rd, with Ferrier just able to keep Taylor behind as they crossed the chequered flag. Adrian Churchill (Bedford Battery Co/Churchill Motorsport Leon Cupra R) finished a strong 5th.
A technical infringement saw both Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra Rs start from the back of the field. After an incredible start, Carl Breeze (Blue Chip Group/Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra R) was 7th by the end of the opening lap, but parked with mechanical problems on lap 10. Stable-mate Alan Blencowe (Blue Diamond/Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra R) also worked his way back up the field and finished a fine 6th.
