Round 17: Brands Hatch

Mat Jackson (Whale Tankers/Jackson Motorsport Leon Cupra R) won Round 17 of the Smartnav SEAT Cupra Championship at Brands Hatch today after overtaking pole-sitter Tom Ferrier (Darwin/Team Parker Racing Leon Cupra R) on the opening lap.

Mat pushed very hard, set the fastest lap of the race and lap four and opened up a big gap, but his advantage was lost after a big slide at Westfield Bend on lap 6. With Ferrier close behind, Mat kept his cool to win by 0.621 seconds.

Alan Blencowe (Blue Diamond/Barwell Motorsport Leon Cupra R) had a close battle with Henry Taylor (Mortgage Strategy magazine/Total Control Racing Leon Cupra R) and eventually finished 3rd.

Tom Boardman (Special Tuning UK/Triple R Leon Cupra R) started from the back of the grid and drove so slowly that he was embroiled in a close race with the doctor’s car! He eventually came into the pit to watch the race and keep his car safe for the final round. All Tom needs to do is start the last SEAT race of the season to win the title.

The race was stopped after the leaders had started lap 10 after Harry Vaulkhard (Fluid Design Solutions/JS Motorsport Leon Cupra R) crashed heavily at Westfield Bend. He’s okay, but his car was badly damaged.

Mat said: “We’ve won eight races now and that’s more than anyone else in the Championship so I’m very happy. I’m starting from pole in the final round, so the plan is to go out and win that too.”
